Martyn Webster marks the extent of the cancerous tumour on the face and neck and begins to excise. Another surgeon cauterises wounds to prevent bleeding. Great care is taken to avoid damaging veins, arteries and nerves.

The incision is continued to the patient's left breast and a “flap” of skin and underlying tissue removed to use in reconstructing her face.

The flap is stitched to cover the wound in the face. The left ear is attached and the breast wound closed. The following day the patient was able to sit up in bed, her prospects for a better quality of life greatly improved.
