Case: Blewu Casshius

Casshius, age 21, works with his father as a farmer in this endemic area about 20 miles north of Accra.
The bacteria probably entered his leg through a miniscule wound and caused this devastating injury. He has been like this for a year and is despairing of ever recovering.
It was heart-rending to witness the agony he underwent while the dressings were being changed (below) as they must every three days. The Buruli ulcer is actively necrotising the flesh in his leg, the thigh is thin and wasted and it is likely that this leg will have to be amputated. (Sadly, this happened in December '05).
